IN EARLY 2017, A PROJECT FOR SUSTAINABLE CRUISE SHIP
TOURISM WAS LAUNCHED IN COZUMEL
The aim of the project was to create framework conditions for a balanced partnership between Cozumel and the Cruise Industry.
Cozumel identified the need to integrate other hotspot cruise destinations (Belize and Roatan). These destinations were facing similar threats and opportunities; thus the Mesoamerican Reef Network emerged in December 2017 as a result.
The initiative was supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) through GIZ, to develop a cooperation strategy that contributes to a sustainable development in the region, linked to environmental, economic and social impacts derived from cruise ship tourism.
